Critics Consensus

By turns emotionally devastating and icy, Expats is a challenging drama made riveting by an ace cast and creator Lulu Wang's deft direction.

Gareth J Explores some challenging topics and is well acted but drags its feet and lacks punch. Slow going and uneventful. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Audience Member Extremely well-made and incredible directing! I love the way the storylines tied together. Nicole Kidman delivers her best performance yet. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Ally Moore J Sadly a waste of time. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review Jamie A I found this fascinating. The setting of Hong Kong gave an insight into this culture. Nicole Kidman played an interesting role. She was wonderful as a struggling mother, overwrought by a vanishing son. A Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review doog l Aside from some of the scenes highlighting class issues, which unfortunately miss the mark and end up feeling forced in there, and not going as deep as they could have. It's sort of points in the general direction of the issues, and then shrugs and returns to the main character.Overall, the series was a slog. A few interesting moments, but not enough that I would ever recommend it to a friend. The writing is not good at all. Characters give unconvincing monologues that drone on, with overall wooden delivery, so consistant, that I began to wonder if it was deliberate. It didn't feel like the majority of the cast was very invested in it and it plods along in a really uneven way.Unfortunately Kidman is becoming less and less convincing as a human being in recent roles. There's a strong uncanny valley vibe going on, and the surgeries seem to have effected her speech as well. The whole performance was just off, and made it extremely difficult to suspend disbelief because I was so fixated on whatever was up with her lips every time she was on screen. The writing, the music, the performances, all fall in the one to two star range. Not much here, and the fact that it's gotten good reviews is seriously baffling to me. Rated 1.5/5 Stars • Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review John C Cringe, I can only assume the "Critics" that gave it 5 stars are bought and paid for. I do like the spotlight on how the privileged class treats/mistreats the plebs that raise their children and serve them drinks on their yaghts. I loved Nichole in many movies but she seems a little too old for this part as a mother of a 5 year old. I mean she has to be maybe 60s so having a 5 year old is a little strange, who starts a family in their 50's ? Expats: Limited Series | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Saloni Gajjar AV Club Expats has a keen understanding of womanhood, with the type of brutal authenticity that only comes from having women in front of and behind the camera.
