GNS3 (2024)

Each software is released under license type that can be found on program pages as well as on search or category pages. Here are the most common license types:

Freeware

Freeware programs can be downloaded used free of charge and without any time limitations. Freeware products can be used free of charge for both personal and professional (commercial use).

Open Source

Open Source software is software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify or enhance. Programs released under this license can be used at no cost for both personal and commercial purposes. There are many different open source licenses but they all must comply with the Open Source Definition - in brief: the software can be freely used, modified and shared.

Free to Play

This license is commonly used for video games and it allows users to download and play the game for free. Basically, a product is offered Free to Play (Freemium) and the user can decide if he wants to pay the money (Premium) for additional features, services, virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the game. In some cases, ads may be show to the users.

Demo

Demo programs have a limited functionality for free, but charge for an advanced set of features or for the removal of advertisem*nts from the program's interfaces. In some cases, all the functionality is disabled until the license is purchased. Demos are usually not time-limited (like Trial software) but the functionality is limited.

Trial

Trial software allows the user to evaluate the software for a limited amount of time. After that trial period (usually 15 to 90 days) the user can decide whether to buy the software or not. Even though, most trial software products are only time-limited some also have feature limitations.

Paid

Usually commercial software or games are produced for sale or to serve a commercial purpose.

FAQs

What are the disadvantages of GNS3? ›

One of the main drawbacks of using GNS3 for STP simulation and testing is that it requires a lot of resources and setup. You need to have a powerful computer with enough RAM, CPU, and disk space to run the virtual devices smoothly. You also need to obtain the device images legally, and configure them properly in GNS3.

Is GNS3 still being used? ›

GNS3 is used in companies all over the world including Fortune 500 companies. GNS3 can help you prepare for certification exams such as the Cisco CCNA, but also help you test and verify real world deployments.

Is GNS3 easy to use? ›

Using GNS3 It offers more features and flexibility, but it is also more complex to use. Also, you need to simulate a large network or real-world network traffic, GNS3 is a better choice.

What is the best platform for GNS3? ›

The GNS3 VM is recommended for most situations when you are using Windows or Mac OS. The GNS3 development team have worked hard to create a lightweight, robust way of creating GNS3 topologies that avoids multiple common issues experienced when using a local install of GNS3.

Is GNS3 used in industry? ›

Real world. GNS3 is not only used for studying, but also for testing networks before they are put into production. Companies around the world test things on GNS3 first before deployment.

What is the alternative of GNS3? ›

PRTG. PRTG Network Monitor is the flagship offering from German software company Paessler, for monitoring local and wide area networks (LANs & WANs), servers, websites, apps, and more.

Is GNS3 good for CCNA? ›

If Cisco's Packet Tracer is the gold standard in virtual network simulators, then GNS3 is the gold standard in virtual network emulators.

Which is better, GNS3 or Eve-Ng? ›

GNS3 is known to be relatively lightweight and can run on modest hardware. However, resource consumption can increase significantly as the complexity of the network grows. EVE-NG, being more resource-intensive, requires a more robust system to handle large-scale and complex simulations effectively.

Which is best, Cisco Packet Tracer or GNS3? ›

Ease of Use: Cisco Packet Tracer is the easiest to use, followed by EVE-NG and GNS3, while VIRL and eNSP have a steeper learning curve. Programmability: GNS3, EVE-NG, VIRL, and eNSP all support network automation and programmability through Python scripting, while Cisco Packet Tracer does not.

Is GNS3 completely free? ›

GNS3 is a FREE software under GPLv3 licensing. See the GNU GPL FAQ for more information. The version of GNS3 isn't a demo or trial version; it is the full version. The source code is freely available on GitHub and can be modified.

Is GNS3 safe to use? ›

GNS3 is a wrapper on proprietary and open source technologies. This means the security level depends on the security of those technologies. The main danger is a rogue image trying to take control of your computer by a process escalation. Use images only from trusted sources!

Is GNS3 a simulator or emulator? ›

Graphical Network Simulator (GNS3) is a free emulator software which allows running actual networking software images on a computer.

What is the difference between GNS3 and GNS3 VM? ›

  • Managing a large network is complicated, requires training and a network manager usually needs to be employed.
  • If the file server breaks down the files on the file server become inaccessible. ...
  • Viruses.

What are the disadvantages of implementing NAT? ›

It breaks the original design of the internet by preventing direct communication between devices behind different NAT devices. Additionally, NAT adds an extra layer of processing and translation to the network traffic, which can introduce latency, errors, or packet loss.

Are there any disadvantages for using a network? ›

The cons of computer networks encompass security vulnerabilities, potential for data breaches, network congestion, reliability issues, and dependency on network infrastructure. Additionally, network downtime can disrupt operations and lead to productivity losses.

What are the disadvantages of virtual routing? ›

Virtual routing and forwarding disadvantages

VRF technologies can be complex and need careful planning and designing to ensure proper management of the routing tables. May have compatibility issues. Some networks and software may not support VRF technologies, impeding its use in some environments.
