How many states are there in UTs in India? ›

The system of government in states closely resembles that of the Union. There are 28 states and 8 Union territories in the country. Union Territories are administered by the President through an Administrator appointed by him/her.

Union Territories (UTs) are federal territories and are administered by the Union Government of India. They are also known as centrally administered territories. In the Union Territories, Lieutenant Governors (LGs) are appointed by the President of India.

India is a federal republic comprising 28 states and 8 union territories. The states and union territories are further subdivided into districts and smaller administrative divisions. The states are self-governing administrative divisions, each having a state government.

Union Territories are administrated by the President acting to such extent, as he thinks fit, through an Administrator appointed by him. Union Territories were formed for their strategic importance, political and administrative centers, for their cultural distinction, etc. These are essentially regions that have unique distinctions from other areas and territories and cannot be merged with them.

Other UTs consists 1 or 2 districts. Eg. Dadra and Nagar Haveli is the only district of that UT. Daman and Diu are the districts of the UT.
