When it comes to indulging in the finer things in life, few foods can boast quite the same ‘wow’ factor as truffle cheese. With its unique earthy notes, nutty flavour and distinct aroma, truffle cheese requires an exquisite pairing that complements it perfectly. In our latest blog, the Godminster team has pulled together some of our favourite truffle pairings, all of which are worthy sidekicks to this rockstar of cheeses.

WHAT WINE GOES WITH TRUFFLE CHEESE?

Selecting the right wine to pair with your truffle cheese is an art form which often involves experimentation to strike the right balance. When choosing a wine, the general rule of thumb is to find one that enhances the delicate notes of the truffle cheese, rather than overpower or mask the flavour.

SPARKLING WINE

A crisp, dry sparkling wine such as Chanceny Saumur Brut from the Loire Valley is a great choice. Made from a blend of 80% Chenin Blanc, 10% Chardonnay and 10% Chenin Blanc, this light sparkling wine boasts floral and fruit notes which are both delicate and elegant, complementing the cheese splendidly.

RED WINE

If you prefer a drop of red, Le Petit Caboche red is a superb option. Distinguished by its red fruit tones and subtle oak aroma, this wine pairs exquisitely with the flavour of the truffle cheese.

WHITE WINE

Aged, lightweight white wines such as Fray Leon Reserva Sauvignon Blanc provide that perfect balance to the earthy, nutty flavour of the cheese, creating a mouth-watering partnership.

PORT

For a perfect after-dinner treat, a bottle of Taylor’s Late Bottled Vintage Port paired with our own Black Truffle Howling Hound cheddar cheese is truly a match made in culinary heaven.

WHAT MEAT CAN BE PAIRED WITH TRUFFLE CHEESE?

Various charcuterie and cured meats go well with truffle cheese. The salty but subtle flavour of Prosciutto di Parma provides a delicious accompaniment while thin slices of cured ham offer a sensational contrast, boosting the overall taste experience. Cured salami, such as Soppressata, can also be a mouth-watering option, resulting in a heavenly symphony of flavours and textures.

WHAT CHUTNEY GOES WITH TRUFFLE CHEESE?

We may be a little biased, but our very own deep, rich Sticky Fig Chutney bursting with fresh fig flavour is the ultimate truffle cheese companion – we guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

WHAT ELSE GOES WITH TRUFFLE CHEESE?

It’s important to remember that truffle cheese will always be the star of the show, so any accompaniments should serve to enhance the cheese rather than overshadow it. We would recommend a side of neutral-flavoured crackers or bread so that the aromatic taste of the truffle cheddar is not compromised.

WHAT SHOULD YOU NOT PAIR WITH TRUFFLE CHEESE?

When it comes to cheese pairings, we are advocates for experimenting with different combinations until you hit upon the right one for you. That said, some pairings should perhaps be approached with caution. Truffle cheese’s delicate yet distinctive taste can easily be masked by other flavours, including:

  • Very spicy foods: The subtle earthy, nutty notes of truffle cheese can by engulfed when paired with extremely spicy ingredients.
  • Bold, highly tannic red wine: While many red wines like Malbec or Pinot Noir complement truffle cheese beautifully, highly tannic or heavily oaked reds can mask the cheese’s delicate flavours.
  • Vinegar-based sauces: Sour or vinegar-heavy sauces can clash with the creamy richness of truffle cheese, resulting in an unpleasant contrast.

LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT TRUFFLE CHEESE RECIPE?

A variety of basic dishes can be transformed into something significantly more luxurious by adding some grated truffle cheese, including creamy pasta or risotto recipes
