For its second time creating clothing for the Canadian Olympic team, the company leaned in to collaboration with a selection of the country’s athletes in order to design the pieces. Lululemon worked with 19 athletes — including Vancouver’s Phil Kim (Breaking), Montreal’s Leylah Fernandez (Tennis) and Okotoks’ Zak Madell (Wheelchair Rugby) — across 14 sports to create the three gear “kits” for the upcoming Games.

“We focused on an adaptive fit through articulation and customizable features. We addressed comfort through fabric mixing and four-way stretch fabrics. We heard the ask for accessible storage, so we engineered a new approach to pocket shapes and placements that are easy to access and secure,” Audrey Reilly, creative director for Team Canada, revealed in a news release.

Additional adaptive design elements include removable sleeves and pants that convert into shorts.

“One of the biggest innovations in the kit is the idea of cooling the body. Temperatures will be high in Europe in July—September so this had to be a key focus,” Reilly shared. “We used close-to-body summer base layers created in our SenseKnit technology, perforation, and sweat-wicking yarns to let moisture move away from the body.”

The sporty collection features Opening Ceremony, Podium and Closing Ceremony pieces. The centrepiece of the designs are three graphic prints.

The Opening Ceremony print is said to be inspired by the “art, architecture and nature found throughout Canada.” The tonal red print appears on zip-up jackets, shorts and more.

The Podium pieces include a digital camo-like, white-and-red printed track suit with a convertible jacket and convertible pant.

The Closing Ceremony prints, created in collaboration with Whistler-based artist Mason Mashon of the Saddle Lake Cree Nation, offers a unique interpretation of the Aurora Borealis.

Additional pieces in the Team Canada x Lululemon range include tops, tees, leggings, socks and other Lululemon staples. The brand’s footwear offering also finds a fit in the collection with the release of the Team Canada BeyondFeel Running Shoe in a patriotic combination of white and red.
