We moved into our fixer upper home a few years ago and have been slowly doing projects ever since. One of the first things we did in the house was our flooring remodel project on our main level, since that’s where we spend the majority of our time. It took us a few years to tackle the upstairs flooring, but we finally did it with Nebraska Furniture Mart! Why We Decided To Take On a Flooring Remodel Project
There are a few reasons we prioritized the flooring remodel projects the way we did… Looking at a home as an investment, flooring is a quick way to increase your value. When we looked at the home, we were told if we never did anything except update the floors that we could make a chunk of profit on the house.
Looking at the home as a place where we spend time, you’re on the floor a ton in some manner. Our home was a rental property, so who knows how many people have lived or even just walked through the spaces where the carpet was… the germs. Ew. That’s a downside to carpet, it holds a lot of ickiness in it, especially if it’s not regularly cleaned and taken care of. Not to mention the carpet had dozens of stains, wear and tear and made the spaces seem dirty even when they were clean. There was not amount of professional carpet cleaning that would fix these floors.
Why We Choose Vinyl For Some Spaces and Carpet For Others
The areas of the house that had carpet include the stairs, hallway, storage room and three guest rooms (and closets). Since the stairs lead to our main floor where we have vinyl wood throughout, we considered matching the upstairs with all NFM vinyl wood flooring. Ultimately we decided to do a combo of flooring types based on our main needs for each space.
Right now two of the rooms are guest bedrooms, but they will eventually be our children’s rooms (no, this is not a pregnancy announcement, I’m just a planner).These rooms, along with the hallway and stairs we decided to go with NFM carpet for an overall cozier feel. Also, if we’re being totally honest here, our dog, Bear, loves the carpet and was sad when the flooring revamp on the main level took that away from him, so that also on our mind. The third room is our home gym space and will eventually be a combo guest room and gym space. I realized how much it helped to have a flat surface while working out at home during the pandemic, both for doing workouts on the ground but also for our bike to be on a flat surface for stability (I may have tipped the bike before, I cannot confirm nor deny), which is why we didn’t go carpet here. With the long term plan of this also being a bedroom, we didn’t want to go with traditional gym flooring and choose the durable Nebraska Furniture Mart vinyl flooring.

Customer Service At Nebraska Furniture Mart Is Excellent (Even AFTER You Pay!)
In order to have your flooring remodel project started, you do have to pay in full. To be honest, this is something I typically don’t like doing purely for the fact that you lose any power in getting things fixed if you don’t owe part of the payment after completion. However, with that said, we had no issues getting top notch help from the NFM team.
On our carpet installation date the wrong carpet was brought to the house. Note, before they even bring it inside your house you have to sign off on it, which is when we caught the mix up. I was able to jump on the phone with their team to try and get things sorted out on the spot. I eventually did have to go to the store to figure out the carpet we were supposed to have. While in the store multiple people made sure I was taken care of and helped me investigate until we found the correct carpet. Do I wish that happened? Of course not, but it did give me a chance to see just how on top of it their customer service team was in handling the situation. They were able to get the install rescheduled for the next day.
NFM Mobile Flooring Van – Samples We Could Actually Take Inside and Try!
We shopped via the NFM Mobile Flooring Van! We scheduled an appointment for the van to come to us, and honestly with as hectic as our schedules are this time of year, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The NFM team created a van to house dozens of different flooring samples for you to look at in person without leaving your home. They also measure your space and are able to provide feedback based on seeing the flooring samples in your space.
There are a few pros and cons to the van, as with any shopping experience.
Mobile Flooring Van Pros and Cons
- We loved being able to take the samples inside to lay in the different rooms to see what the flooring looked like inside the home, which saved us time going back and forth to the store (note, samples will look different in your home vs online vs at the store etc!).
- It was easy to play around with different combinations.
- Having the team inside to see the space helped us get great feedback and direction on the flooring color family. They asked if the current paint, furniture, etc, was staying the same or changing, and that’s why we started in the grey family.
- It was easy to get products mixed up when creating the order for the flooring. We had 2 carpet and 2 vinyl samples we were choosing from- the wrong carpet was written down on the order form. Which leads me to a pro tip: write down your carpet names, take photos the information, etc, and use that to double check over the phone when the team calls to schedule your install. We usually do this shopping in store, but it didn’t cross our mind to do it with the team in our home.
- Because the van isn’t as large as the store, you can’t get every samples brought to your house. Honestly, this was more of a “pro” than “con” for me because the selection of samples was overwhelming enough.
- You have to book an appointment vs the flexibility of going into the store at any time. Again, more of a “pro” for me because it forced it to be on my calendar and not just fall to the bottom of a to do list.
- All in all, I would do the mobile showroom again.
Tips For Revamping Your Flooring
- Look at samples in different light. Sunlight during the morning vs afternoon, the lamp, overhead lighting, etc will all change the way your flooring looks.
- Speckle carpet is a great way to not see every little blemish. Our dog sheds like crazy. I used to see his hear on our light, solid color carpet and it drove me crazy. This is also going to be great once we have kids. We want our home to be clean of course, but it is going to be lived in and not perfect.
- Be honest with the experts when trying to decide what type of flooring, any extra protection you might need, etc. They can’t help you make the best choice if you leave out important info.
- Pay attention to warranty info and keep all your receipts. This goes for everything, not just a flooring remodel project. We have a binder where all these documents live in case you need them in the future.
- If you think you might be renovating a space in the future, buy extra flooring to have on hand.
- When they offer the extra carpet, keep it. Same reasoning as above.
- You can save money by moving the furniture on your own.
- Write down the name of your flooring.
- Don’t rush into anything.

How much did it cost to replace the flooring in your home with NFM?
The exact costs of replacing your flooring will vary based on square footage, what type of product is being demoed out, what is being installed, etc (get a quote here). A few other costs to keep in mind include floorboards, transition strips, carpet pads, flooring treatments, moving furniture and warranties. Our flooring total for around 1400 sq feet was around $6,000.
How long does it take for NFM to install the flooring?
The Nebraska Furniture Mart flooring installation itself took 2 days-1 for the NFM carpet flooring and another 1 for the vinyl. The NFM vinyl flooring is dropped off a few days before work was done to get acclimated before being installed. The acclimation period is extremely important for vinyl, trust me.
Is there anything about the NFM flooring Installation process that you did not like?
Beyond the Nebraska Furniture Mart carpet flooring product mixup on the install date, the only other thing we wished would have been different is the subfloor. When you hire NFM for the projects, they are doing the demo, install and slight fixes in between, such as nailing down the boards that might have been coming up, but nothing too intensive.
With our house being older, we have squeaky floors and that was only partially addressed during the process. Apparently our floors aren’t very level either (which is not at the fault of NFM, it’s the subfloors below the removed/installed flooring materials) and I wish we would have been notified by the workers about this so we could have paused the project to try and get that fixed. Is it the end of the world? No. Is it a little awkward that specifically in the workout room it’s squeaky and uneven? Yeah.
Would you use NFM for further flooring projects?
I would absolutely recommend Nebraska Furniture Mart for future flooring remodel projects. Heaven forbid we have to replace any flooring (we have actually had to do main floor twice due to flooding, oooph), we would go through NFM over the other companies we have experience with. The speed of the flooring revamp project, the product selection and the customer service offered has set them apart.

I’m also a very weird combination of particular and laid back… I know the few things that I want to happen, but exactly how we get there, I’m not so worried about it. Nebraska Furniture Mart somehow let me feel involved and heard with my opinions, but also like I was being taken care of by experts and didn’t have to spend time or effort worrying about the small things.
